Through the research of our FHA Historian Adam Woog, listen to origins and evolution of Seattle’s iconic houseboat community, tracing its start back to the mid-1800s when floating shacks supported the rapidly growing logging and industrial sectors.   These stories and more are available in Adam's new book, Still Afloat: Seattle's Historic and Iconic Houseboats, available on Amazon. Houseboats and The People Who Live In Them.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on a houseboat? To wake up to the sounds of birdsong and drink your coffee on a floating porch as kayakers and ducks stroll by waving their oars and flicking their tails in greeting?
Or maybe you enjoyed the movie Sleepless in Seattle, the romance and passion of a life afloat, the mystery and allure of living on the water while the city pounds on behind you.

As broke and idealistic college students in tiny apartments and broken-down houses, we were very curious to find out how the other half lives. We conducted a series of interviews with real life houseboat owners, and while it wasn’t all Tom Hanks and sunsets, we learned a lot about the houseboat and floating home communities of Seattle and got a chance to tackle the age-old question, Is it better down where it’s wetter?
Our audience is anyone living in Seattle who’s ever wondered about houseboat living and what it’s all about.

Through the research of our FHA Historian Adam Woog, learn about the gradual gentrification and modernization of Seattle's houseboat community, transitioning from a perceived "Bohemian stigma" to an affluent lifestyle featuring cooperatively owned docks, new architectural styles, and strong community spirit resulting from activism, which ultimately gained iconic worldwide recognition following the success of the 1993 film Sleepless in Seattle.  These stories and more are available in Adam's new book, Still Afloat: Seattle's Historic and Iconic Houseboats, available on Amazon.
